Independent Hearts by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos

Three independent hearts: Red Independent Heart, Black Independent Heart and Golden Independent Heart. Each heart is a huge “Heart of Viana”, an iconic piece of Portuguese filigree, filled with plastic cutlery.

The hearts rotate around their axis, symbolizing the cycles of life and eternal return. The movement is accompanied by the sound of three famous fado songs performed by Amália Rodrigues, a famous Portuguese fado singer.

An emotional installation by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, inspired by the art of filigree, speaks of the illusory boundaries that separate luxury and vulgarity.

“Red Independent Heart” is currently on display in Madeira as part of the exhibition “The World Begins Here” at the Monte Palace Museum.
Joana Vasconcelos attended the opening of the exhibition with José Berardo.
